Why I Need To Work on My "No"s

Girl Scouts. Brownie 3s. Leader. Yikes.

"Can you be the Brownie 3s leader?"

"Um, okay. I guess."

So. Being a Girl Scout leader is not a simple thing. There are "Try-Its" to keep up with and activities to plan and badges to order and "What are we going to eat for supper, people?!?" to think about.

But I'm the Girl Scout Brownie 3 leader. Five 8-year-olds are looking at me on every-other-Tuesday-night: "What are we going to do this week?" "Uhhh... Well, we could make a recipe book! Yay!"

I keep thinking, "Why didn't I just say no?!?" Just say no, people!

I have a vague memory -- only because Momma and Daddy have a newspaper clipping with the photographic evidence -- of being a Brownie. I mean, there are no actual memories. I just know that, apparently, I was a Brownie at one point. And I had a mean perm in my hair. So that qualifies me to lead Rhiannon's Brownie 3 group. Parents out there should be concerned. Seriously.

I think, so far, the Girl Scouts Experience has taught me this: I DON'T KNOW HOW TO HAVE FUN.

Why can't it just be for fun? Why does it have to be about badges and uniforms and meetings and blah blah blah? I just want to be at home, really. But this is FUN! Right. Fun. Uh-huh. Fun.

Tonight, I was "explaining" through clenched teeth to Bella why Rhiannon might feel the need to pinch her arm really hard.... and some mother, some angel gave me a smile, gave me an "I know." Mothers are the best, am I right? Whoever you were, Unknown Mother, thank you. From the very bottom of my heart, thank you!
